I am sitting here writing this with a frown on my face after reading that two of my favourite bingo sites Television adverts have being banned by the Advertising Standards Authority. Two Tombola Bingo adverts are now banned after one person made a complaint to the ASA challenging whether their adverts appealed to children or young persons and the complaint was upheld.

The two Tombola Bingo adverts in question are both based around their easily recognisable fairground theme accompanied by their theme song ‘Tombola ‘sung by the Spanish star Maria Isabel y Marisol. The first advert was for ‘Tombola World’ and showed all of the bingo sites attractions linked to various animated fairground rides surrounded by all of brightly coloured Tombola bingo ball characters. The voice over advertised “Every day, thousands of people join in the fun at Tombola.co.uk.  With over 35 chat rooms to choose from, you can join the ride, make new friends and play your favourite bingo games.  Plus join now for more chances to WIN with up to £25 Money Match; Tombola.co.uk where the fun goes on and on”.

The second advert also showing the same fairground but this time including hot air balloons and battleships stated “With loads of great prizes to be won, thousands of people are joining in the fun at tombola.co.uk.  We’ve got exclusive games you won’t find anywhere else.  Play longer for less with Bingo-lite from just 2p a ticket.  See if you can sink the fleet with Battleships.  Why not try your hand with Cinco?  Or stick to your favourite bingo games.  Plus join now for more chances to WIN with up to £25 Money Match! tombola.co.uk where the fun goes on and on”.

The bingo sites response stated that there were using the fairground as a metaphor for the online bingo experience to attract new players but not a younger audience. They had taken into account similar animated advertisements to ensure their adverts only targeted the over 18 audience and had taken rigorous steps to ensure under 18′s were not allowed to play at Tombola Bingo. Sadly the ASA upheld the complaint because in their opinion the fairground theme which included a big top, ice skating rink, helter skelter, rollercoaster and fireworks were all things that held a particular appeal to children. On top of this they felt Tombola Bingo’s brightly coloured ball characters looked like brightly coloured sweets. Further more ASA also felt that the repetitive lyrics in the Tombola theme would be of particular appeal to children.

This means Tombola Bingo can no longer broadcast either of these television adverts in their current form. On a personal note I will be really sad to see them go as in my opinion they are some of the best bingo adverts on the television and I just love the Tombola theme which I hope will return at some point in the future.
